There's no strict dress code, but dressing smart for the tropical Yucatan climate will make your visit far more enjoyable.
What to Wear to Chichen Itza
Clothing
- Light, breathable fabrics (cotton, linen, moisture-wicking)
- Loose-fitting clothing for ventilation
- Light colors that reflect heat
- Long-sleeve sun shirt (optional UV protection)
- Comfortable shorts or lightweight pants
- Swimsuit underneath (if visiting cenotes on a combo tour)
Footwear
- Comfortable walking shoes or sneakers
- Sport sandals with ankle straps (Tevas, Chacos)
- Broken-in hiking shoes for uneven terrain
- High heels or dress shoes
- Flip-flops (slippery on stone, no ankle support)
- New shoes (you'll walk 2-4 km on uneven ground)
Chichen Itza Sun & Heat Protection

Chichen Itza Site Rules & Regulations
No climbing on any structures
All pyramids and buildings are off-limits for climbing. This rule has been in effect since 2006.
No touching carved surfaces
Oils from skin damage ancient stone carvings. Admire with your eyes and camera only.
No food inside the archaeological zone
Water is allowed. Food must be consumed outside the entrance area.
No drones without INAH permit
Unauthorized drone use can result in confiscation and fines.
No commercial photography without permit
Personal photos are fine. Professional equipment requires a paid permit.
No pets inside the site
Service animals are the only exception.
No smoking inside the archaeological zone
Smoking is prohibited throughout the site.
Chichen Itza Seasonal Dressing Tips
☀️ Dry Season (Nov–Apr)
Warm and sunny. Temperatures 25-33°C (77-91°F). Low humidity.
Wear: Light clothing, hat, sunglasses. A light layer for the air-conditioned bus ride.
🌧️ Rainy Season (May–Oct)
Hot and humid. Temperatures 28-38°C (82-100°F). Afternoon showers common.
Wear: Quick-dry fabrics, waterproof layer or poncho, water-resistant shoes. Bug spray is essential.
